It was a good year, with the exception of shedding tears over math.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The kindness of children who are in Callie\u2019s life always amazes us. Everyday, a group of girls has recess inside with Callie instead of going outside to run around on the playground with other classmates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The girls play with mini Lalaloopsies, draw, or play teacher together. Friendship is one of the biggest blessings in Callie\u2019s life.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_816\" style=\"width: 296px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.calliegolden.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/c-packer.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-816\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-816\" class=\"wp-image-816 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.calliegolden.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/c-packer-286x300.jpg\" alt=\"Callie and her teacher\" width=\"286\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-816\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Callie and her teacher, Miss Packer.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were bumps along the way this school year. In December and January, Callie completed the four loading doses of Spinraza and we ultimately decided not to continue with the treatments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nathan and I didn\u2019t see any improvement in Callie\u2019s strength or stamina, and we were putting Callie at risk with every treatment, which was administered by spinal injection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We have always believed Callie should have a say in decisions that affect her life. After asking her on several occasions if she was sure she wanted to stop the treatments (something she\u2019d been begging to do after the first injection), she finally said, \u201cI can\u2019t do that [Spinraza] for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s her life to live, and we\u2019re grateful for the peace God has given her heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February, after her ninth birthday, Callie got what we think was the flu with recurrent pneumonia. She stopped eating and, for a couple days, was withdrawn and not very interactive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After an uncertain couple of weeks, Callie began improving, and we\u2019re grateful for the additional time we\u2019ve been given with her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As always, Callie is making the most of her life. She\u2019s looking forward to a busy summer:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recently got a trailer that hitches on to the back of Nathan\u2019s bicycle for Callie to ride in. Not being able to ride a bike has always been one of Callie\u2019s greatest heartbreaks, but she was determined to do the next best thing. She loves it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had Vacation Bible School this past week, something that\u2019s always one of the highlights of her summer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The minute she heard about a cheerleading camp, she wanted to be signed up, even though it\u2019s a new place where she doesn\u2019t know anyone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll be making a trek to the beach where she\u2019ll no doubt want to stay outside all day.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So many people help give Callie the high quality of life she has. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_812\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.calliegolden.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/c-alisa.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-812\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-812\" class=\"wp-image-812 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.calliegolden.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/c-alisa-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Callie with her nurse\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Callie with her nurse, Alisa.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her school nurses, Alisa and Marsha, enable Callie to attend school regularly. Her teacher, Miss Packer, encouraged Callie through her tears and all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Callie\u2019s older brothers play such a significant role in her life. The grief of her diagnosis has gotten only more intense for them as they\u2019ve gotten older.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_815\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.calliegolden.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/c-marsha.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-815\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-815\" class=\"wp-image-815 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.calliegolden.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/c-marsha-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Callie with her nurse\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Callie with her nurse, Marsha.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But they\u2019ve never distanced themselves from her \u2014 on the contrary, they play on the beach, pull her on a snow sled, have tea parties, visit\u00a0Callie\u2019s made-up universe called Twintopia, and cheer her on in everything she does.<\/p>\n<p>Like any other child, Callie will get her feelings hurt or feel left out. She can get so tired that she can\u2019t play like she wants to.
